Did you know there are certain foods you should avoid during pregnancy? Let's take a look together

Fish with high levels of mercury - Mercury in high amounts can be toxic to the nervous system - it's especially dangerous for growing babies and children as their nervous systems are not fully developed.

Raw/Uncooked Fish - These are at a high risk of causing viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections, such as norovirus, Vibrio, Salmonella, and Listeria. Pregnant people are at a higher risk of these infections vs nonpregnant people.

Undercooked/Raw Meat - Again we are looking at bacteria infections such as Toxoplasma, E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella, and potential parasites.

Raw Eggs + Raw Sprouts - These are a high risk for salmonella

Organ Meat - Ordinarily these are high and rich in healthy vitamins, especially vitamin A. However too much vitamin A can be toxic to your unborn baby and can cause physical malformations and potential miscarriages.

Unwashed produce - These are a high risk of Toxoplasma, E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria, so please wash your produce before consuming.

Unpasteurized foods (milk, cheese, juices) as they are a high risk of Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli, and Campylobacter.

Alcohol - there is no safe amount proven for consumption during pregnancy. It’s advised to completely avoid drinking alcohol when pregnant, as it increases the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. Even in small amounts alcohol can impact your baby's development including brain development, fetal alcohol syndrome, and an increased risk of SIDS after birth.
